Who we are
Piacere, nice to meet you!
We are Torben Heerze (54) and Klaartje Heerze-te Winkel (51), owners and landlords of Casa San Carlo in Monteleone d'Orvieto.
In February 2007 we saw Casa San Carlo for the first time, right between Perugia and Orvieto and right on the border with Tuscany. The house had everything that would appeal to our guests: an impressive view, a large swimming pool, a communal living room, spacious apartments to rent out, a lovely large covered terrace along the house...
In March 2008 we signed the deed of sale and started working like crazy to prepare Casa San Carlo for the rapidly approaching tourist season. Because we emigrated with a small baby and had never run a guesthouse before, the first months (or rather, the first few years ;)) were nice and challenging.
In May 2008 we received our first official guests. Now, more than 17 years later, we still enjoy the conviviality of all the guests who receive us every year in Casa San Carlo. In order to be able to separate work and private life to some extent, we live with our two teenage daughters in a rented house within walking distance of Casa San Carlo.
Coming home to Italy
From season 1, which started with the May holidays of 2008, we wanted to offer all our guests a casual, family atmosphere. We like it when our guests feel at home quickly, when they describe their stay at Casa San Carlo as 'coming home to Umbria'. We have welcomed many of our guests several times, many of our guests have become dear friends. And that is exactly what we hoped for when we started this adventure. Casa San Carlo has given us the opportunity to live our lives in a lot of freedom: working our own business, while also being able to be together with our children every day.
We have never tried to create a 'concept', as it is called today. We have furnished Casa San Carlo, in terms of house and in terms of 'our services', out of the desire to allow as many different types of guests as possible to enjoy our unique place, our nice house and the beautiful Umbria. Casa San Carlo is ideally laid out and furnished for individual guests and for larger groups.
That is why, since our start in 2008, we also organize (small-scale) weddings and offer our 'Specials' every year: Wine-Food Weekends, an annual Masterclass Portrait Photography and yoga retreats. In addition, from April 1 to November 1, we are of course happy to welcome all kinds of holiday guests of all ages. In the months of July and August we mainly receive families, most of them with children aged 0 to 16 years. We hope to welcome you too in beautiful Umbria!
